| Rand al'Thor The central protagonist of the Wheel of Time and the Dragon Reborn - the reincarnation of Lews Therin Telamon, the channeller who sealed the Dark One's prison three thousand years ago and in doing so tainted the male half of the One Power, driving himself and every male channeller of his age to madness and destruction. Rand begins the series as a sheepherder from Emond's Field with no knowledge of his heritage or destiny, and the fourteen books follow his transformation from a frightened young man running from his fate into someone capable of facing the Dark One at the Last Battle. His arc is one of the most developed in fantasy literature - a sustained examination of what prophecy, power, and the weight of being necessary does to a person. He can channel saidin, the male half of the One Power, and slowly goes mad from the taint as the series progresses, making him simultaneously the world's greatest hope and its greatest danger. |
| Logain Ablar A false Dragon who could channel - one of the rare men born with the ability - who was captured by Aes Sedai and gentled before the series begins. His arc is one of the most quietly impressive in the sequence: stripped of his power, broken, and rebuilt into something harder and more purposeful. He eventually becomes one of the leaders of the Black Tower and one of the few male channellers whose story ends with genuine hope. | Leader |
| Mazrim Taim A false Dragon - a man who could channel - captured before the events of the series and later released by Rand to help run the Black Tower. Taim is brilliant, ruthless, and contemptuous of almost everyone. His loyalties are opaque for most of the series before being definitively resolved in the final books. | Leader |
