Terms of Use
Last updated: 9 March 2026
Using OpenFiction
By using OpenFiction, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
OpenFiction is a free platform for tracking fictional characters across books and series. You can browse without an account, but you'll need one to contribute content, submit requests, or set up a reading profile.
Your account
- You must be at least 13 years old to create an account
- You're responsible for keeping your account secure
- Use a display name that's appropriate for a general audience
- Don't create multiple accounts to bypass restrictions
You can delete your account at any time from your profile settings. Account deletion is subject to a 30-day cooling-off period. See our privacy policy for details on what happens to your data.
Contributing content
When you contribute to OpenFiction (adding character data, appearances, relationships, etc.), you agree that:
- Your contributions are accurate to the best of your knowledge
- You won't submit copyrighted text (like quoting entire passages from books)
- Your contributions can be reviewed, edited, or removed by curators
- Your contributions are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0), meaning they become part of the OpenFiction database and may be shared through our public API
Factual information about fictional characters (who appears where, what happens to them) is not copyrightable. However, we ask that you write notes and descriptions in your own words rather than copying from books or other sources.
Content requests and voting
Submitting a request or voting doesn't guarantee that content will be added. We prioritise based on community interest, available resources, and what fits OpenFiction's scope. We may edit, merge, or remove requests at our discretion.
Acceptable use
Don't use OpenFiction to:
- Submit deliberately inaccurate or misleading information
- Harass, abuse, or be disrespectful to other users or curators
- Spam requests, contributions, or votes
- Attempt to access other users' accounts or private data
- Scrape the site in ways that affect performance for other users
- Use the site for anything illegal
We may restrict, suspend, or ban accounts that violate these guidelines. See account statuses for more details.
Intellectual property
OpenFiction tracks factual information about characters in published works of fiction. All book titles, character names, and related details belong to their respective authors and publishers.
The OpenFiction platform (design, code, and original content) is our intellectual property. The community-contributed character data is available through our public API for non-commercial use.
Copyright notice and takedown
OpenFiction respects the intellectual property rights of authors and publishers. While factual information about fictional characters is not copyrightable, we take claims of copyright infringement seriously.
If you believe content on OpenFiction infringes your copyright, you can:
- Use the Report button on any content page and select "Copyright" as the report type
- Email us directly at support@openfiction.org with the subject line "Copyright Notice"
Please include:
- A description of the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed
- The specific URL(s) on OpenFiction where the allegedly infringing content appears
- Your contact information (name and email)
- A statement that you are the copyright holder or authorised to act on their behalf
We will review all valid notices promptly and remove or disable access to infringing content. Repeated or wilful infringement by a user may result in account suspension or ban.
Availability and changes
OpenFiction is provided as-is. We do our best to keep the site running and accurate, but we can't guarantee uninterrupted access or that all content is error-free.
We may update these terms from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will notify registered users via an in-app notification and update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review these terms periodically. Continuing to use OpenFiction after changes means you accept the updated terms.
Data protection
We process personal data in accordance with UK data protection law (UK GDPR). Full details of what we collect, how we use it, and your rights are set out in our privacy policy.
Liability
OpenFiction is a free, community-driven project. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any damages arising from your use of the site, including spoilers encountered due to incomplete data or incorrect filtering. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death, personal injury, or fraud.
You agree to indemnify and hold OpenFiction harmless from any claims, losses, or damages (including legal fees) arising from your breach of these terms or your contributions to the site.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from your use of OpenFiction will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
We encourage you to contact us first if you have a concern - most issues can be resolved informally. You can reach us via our Help & Support page or by emailing support@openfiction.org.
