Our commitment
OpenFiction is committed to making the site accessible to as many people as possible. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard.
What we do
We have taken the following steps to make OpenFiction accessible:
- Semantic HTML throughout the site, with proper heading hierarchy and landmark regions
- Keyboard navigation support for all interactive elements
- Focus indicators that meet contrast requirements
- Skip-to-content links for keyboard and screen reader users
- ARIA labels and roles where needed to provide context for assistive technology
- Colour contrast ratios that meet WCAG AA standards for both light and dark modes
- Touch targets of at least 44x44 pixels for interactive elements
- Respect for
prefers-reduced-motion- all animations are disabled when this setting is active - Responsive design that works across screen sizes and zoom levels up to 200%
- Form fields with associated labels and clear error messages
Known limitations
We are aware of the following areas where accessibility could be improved, and are working to address them:
- Some drag-and-drop interactions (such as reordering reading orders) do not yet have keyboard-only alternatives
- Spoiler guard reveal animations may not fully respect all motion preferences
Feedback
If you encounter any accessibility barriers on OpenFiction, please let us know. We take accessibility feedback seriously and will do our best to address issues promptly.
You can reach us through our contact page or email us at support@openfiction.org.
When reporting an issue, it helps if you can tell us which page you were on, what you were trying to do, and which browser or assistive technology you were using.
Testing
We regularly test OpenFiction with a combination of automated tools (axe, Lighthouse) and manual testing with keyboard navigation. We also run periodic colour contrast audits across both light and dark themes.
