Part: Summer's End
A seasonal interlude marking the close of summer, between Maulkin's tangle reaching the Rain Wild River and the convergence of crises across Bingtown, the Pirate Isles and the Rain Wilds.
Prologue: She Who Remembers
She Who Remembers has spent her entire life imprisoned by the Abominations, who stole her ancestral memories to power their prophecies. Freed at last by Wintrow Vestrit, she follows the strange silver-hulled liveship that smells inexplicably like one of her own kind. She encounters a deranged white serpent who ignores her and fixates on the ship's hull, muttering madly. Driven by duty, she forcibly wraps him and floods him with the ancestral memories he has been denied, restoring his deeper mind. He awakens with anger and despair rather than gratitude, declaring it is too late, and flees into the depths - leaving She Who Remembers alone once more. Chapter 1: The Rain Wilds
Malta paddles Satrap Cosgo and Kekki through the predawn Rain Wild River towards Trehaug, exhausted after escaping the buried Elderling city. The Satrap loses their only steering plank, and the current sweeps them helplessly downriver past the city; Malta shouts for Kendry but receives no response. Meanwhile, Keffria works alongside Jani Khuprus in the collapsed tunnels searching for Malta and Reyn, fearing the worst after the earthquakes. Trapped in the flooded Crowned Rooster Chamber, Reyn and Selden watch the last of the muck rise toward them and begin improvising a branch-raft to stay afloat. News of a silver-blue dragon spotted above Trehaug stirs hope that Tintaglia has truly emerged - and that she may have passed through the very chamber where the boys are trapped. Chapter 2: Traders and Traitors
Ronica Vestrit discovers Cerwin Trell sheltering in her ransacked Bingtown home, and learns from him the full horror of what has befallen the city: New Trader attacks, Chalcedean galleys in the harbour, and the Satrap apparently fled. Ronica pushes on to Davad Restart's house, now occupied by Serilla and a gathering of Traders debating Bingtown's future. She encounters the volatile Roed Caern, who advocates violent retaliation, while Serilla tries to consolidate power as the Satrap's Companion. Ronica argues for Trader unity and measured response, clashing with both Roed's extremism and Serilla's political manoeuvring. The meeting ends inconclusively, with Ronica leaving more determined than ever to rally the true Bingtown Traders. Chapter 3: Wintrow
Wintrow lies gravely injured aboard the Vivacia, his wound dangerously infected while Etta tends him devotedly and Kennit watches from a careful distance. The dragon-voice within reaches into Wintrow's fevered mind and teaches him to channel his priest's healing focus inward, directing his own body's recovery. She Who Remembers continues to shadow the ship's hull beneath the waves, sensing its impossible dragon-scent and refusing to abandon the mystery. Kennit manipulates Wintrow's illness to deepen the boy's dependency on him, presenting himself as a concerned guardian to the crew. The tension between Wintrow's loyalty to his family, his captivity under Kennit, and the dragon stirring within Vivacia begins to sharpen. POV: Wintrow Vestrit·On page: Vivacia, Kennit, Etta, She Who Remembers, Bolt
Chapter 4: Tintaglia's Flight
Tintaglia hunts in the Rain Wilds, gorging herself on food to fuel her newly physical form and revelling in the freedom of flight after centuries in her cocoon. Responding to the psychic pull she shares with Reyn, she dives into the flooded Crowned Rooster Chamber and drags him and Selden free of the rising muck, depositing them on the docks of Trehaug. Reyn pleads desperately with her to find Malta, who was swept downriver with the Satrap; Tintaglia locates the small boat on the Rain Wild River but cannot safely retrieve Malta from it. Tintaglia severs her mental link with Reyn, unwilling to be bound by human obligations, and departs to pursue her true purpose - finding and guiding the serpents to the cocooning grounds. Althea meets privately with Brashen to discuss the disturbing news: Lavoy is quietly agitating the crew to abandon their rescue mission and turn pirate, targeting slavers for profit. Brashen and Althea are caught between maintaining authority and preventing outright mutiny, with Paragon himself growing darker and less predictable. The two struggle to trust each other as lovers and as officers, their personal tension complicating every command decision. POV: Althea Vestrit·On page: Lavoy, Clef, The Fool, Brashen Trell, Paragon
Chapter 6: An Independent Woman
Serilla hosts Ronica at Restart Hall, using her as a source of information about Old Trader sentiment while presenting a facade of cooperative leadership. Roed Caern arrives with word that the Satrap has escaped Rain Wild custody, and in private proposes marriage to Serilla as a bid to legitimise his own power over Bingtown. Ronica overhears this exchange and realises Serilla is not an ally but a rival power broker; she slips away with Rache before she can be used further. The Bingtown Traders' Council convenes at last, with both Serilla and Ronica attending, and takes its first tentative steps toward organised resistance and self-governance. Ronica leaves the meeting cautiously hopeful but clear-eyed about the dangers posed by Roed's faction. POV: Serilla·On page: Ronica Vestrit, Roed Caern, Rache·Mentioned: Davad Restart
Chapter 7: Dragon Ship
Wintrow recovers enough consciousness to resist the dragon within Vivacia, insisting that herself still exists and must not be erased. The dragon forces a full and overwhelming psychic union between Wintrow and the ship, causing Vivacia to experience the full horror of what she is - a liveship built from a dead dragon's transformed body - and to realise she has never been the person she believed herself to be. Shattered by this revelation, Vivacia goes grey and unresponsive, her figurehead turning featureless and cold, threatening to destroy herself and Wintrow with her. Kennit sits with the darkened ship through the night, telling her stories about freedom and power; the dragon within surfaces and introduces herself as Bolt, negotiating a partnership of piracy and mutual advantage with the pirate king. On the Rain Wild River, a Chalcedean war galley rescues Malta, Satrap Cosgo, and a dying Kekki from the drifting boat, taking them aboard under ambiguous circumstances. The Chalcedean captain treats the Satrap with studied deference, but Malta senses the danger of their position immediately - they are valuable hostages, not honoured guests. The Satrap, heedless of the risk, bathes in river water brought to him, unaware of its acid properties. Malta begins carefully managing both the Satrap and their captors, drawing on Kekki's intimate knowledge of Jamaillian court politics for guidance. The Paragon is ambushed by Kennit's pirate fleet; the crew's poor discipline and divided loyalties result in a chaotic and ineffective defence. Lavoy attempts to arm Paragon directly, but Amber defies him, and the standoff reveals the fracture lines in the crew's authority structure. Clef kills a boarding pirate, a shocking act that both horrifies and galvanises the crew. Althea fights boarders and captures a prisoner, who is questioned and reveals information about conditions aboard . A former slave who served on Vivacia takes Althea aside privately and describes in harrowing detail the abuses perpetrated under the ship's pirate captivity, hardening Althea's resolve to reclaim her family's ship. Serilla, in a rare moment of conscience, obliquely warns Ronica without betraying Roed openly. Ronica and Rache flee Restart Hall through the back gardens, moving through Bingtown's damaged streets in the dark. They find sanctuary at Sparse Kelter's home in the Three Ships district, where ordinary Bingtown folk have maintained quiet order despite the chaos. Ronica drafts a letter to Grag Tenira, working to build an alliance that can outflank both Roed's faction and Serilla's ambitions. Chapter 11: Bodies and Souls
Wintrow confronts Bolt directly, refusing her offer to heal his maimed hand on the grounds that accepting her gifts means accepting her supremacy over Vivacia's identity. Etta speaks privately with Bolt and is persuaded, in an intimate and troubling conversation, to remove the contraceptive charm she has long worn - a significant act that reveals Bolt's agenda to bind Kennit's future to the ship. Meanwhile, in the depths of the sea, Shreever's tangle of serpents discovers the submerged ruins of the ancient city of Yruran; Maulkin reads the memories encoded in the stones and resolves with new urgency to find She Who Remembers. Kennit prepares his own courtship of Bolt, instinctively understanding that to truly command the ship he must win the dragon's willing partnership. Chapter 12: Alliances

Tintaglia discovers a serpent stranded and dying in the shallows of the Rain Wild River; unable to save it, she kills it mercifully and consumes it, absorbing its memories and gaining crucial understanding of the serpents' plight. Through those memories she grasps that the river channels must be deepened for the serpents to pass upriver to the cocooning grounds, and determines to compel humans to do this work. Brashen confronts Lavoy about the mate's insubordination and incitement of the crew, but remains barely contained.
