Filip Inaros, living under the name Filip Nagata, has spent forty years running from his past as Marco Inaros's son and accomplice in the bombardment of Earth. Now an ageing Belter technician stranded on the colony planet Jannah after the ring gates collapsed, he is one of four hundred people in the settlement of Beta, which is beset by massive migratory creatures that periodically smash through their walls. When the town votes to relocate out of the creatures' path, a charismatic maintenance chief named Jandro defies the decision and begins fortifying the town instead, and his physical courage in fighting the monsters gives him enough popular support to override the democratic process. Filip recognises in Jandro the same dangerous qualities his father possessed - the certainty, the charm, the way people surrendered their judgment to follow a strong man - and when Jandro's crew begins bullying and intimidating the civilian leadership with impunity, Filip decides to act. He rigs a charged capacitor from the food production system and kills Jandro with it, then surrenders himself for punishment. The settlement's administrator, Nami Veh, sentences him to exile rather than death, giving him minimal survival supplies and sending him south toward the distant and possibly abandoned Alpha settlement, telling him to come back when he understands why what he did was wrong.
