Prologue
In the cold northern seas, the serpent Maulkin rouses his tangle of sea serpents, urging them to press on through unfamiliar waters toward a destination none of them can clearly remember. Shreever and Sessurea follow his lead as Maulkin releases memory-laden toxins that stir half-forgotten images of a great migration. The serpents sense that the time of their changing is long overdue and that some ancient pattern has gone wrong, leaving them adrift and diminishing. Maulkin insists they must keep moving, trusting the instinct that something - a guide, a place, a transformation - still awaits them. POV: Maulkin·On page: Shreever, Sessurea
Chapter 1: Of Priests and Pirates
Kennit visits the eerie Others' Island with his sailor Gankis, consulting the magical Other who shows him a vision of his future self crowned as a king - but the vision is incomplete and unsettling. Determined to become King of the Pirates, Kennit purchases a charm from the island's repository despite Gankis's superstitious fear, then departs. The chapter shifts to Wintrow at his Sa monastery, where his mentor Berandol informs him that his grandfather Ephron is dying and his father Kyle demands he come home to serve aboard the family liveship. Wintrow is devastated to be pulled from his religious vocation, struggling to accept that his life's path may be entirely redirected by his father's will. POV: Kennit·On page: Gankis, Wintrow Vestrit, Brother Berandol·Mentioned: Ephron Vestrit, Kyle Haven
Chapter 2: Liveships
Brashen Trell wakes from a nightmare of a past shipwreck and reflects on his life as a disinherited sailor serving loyally under Ephron Vestrit aboard the liveship Vivacia. When the ship docks in Bingtown, Althea arrives and confronts her brother-in-law Kyle about her right to eventually captain Vivacia, but Kyle dismisses her claim entirely. Brashen then slips away to visit the mad beached liveship Paragon, sitting with the blind and broken ship in a gesture of rough companionship. The encounter reveals Brashen's loneliness and his unusual capacity for sympathy toward the outcast and forgotten. POV: Brashen Trell·On page: Althea Vestrit, Kyle Haven, Vivacia, Paragon·Mentioned: Ephron Vestrit
Chapter 3: Ephron Vestrit
Ronica Vestrit tends to her gravely ill husband Ephron at home, managing the household and their mounting financial troubles while concealing the full extent of their debts from him. Old family friend Davad Restart visits and inadvertently reveals that a New Trader named Mingsley wants to buy Vestrit land - an offer that appalls Ronica as a betrayal of Bingtown Trader tradition. Ronica refuses firmly, but privately she is terrified by how few options remain as the family's debts close in around them. The scene establishes the precarious state of the Old Trader families in the face of New Trader encroachment. POV: Ronica Vestrit·On page: Ephron Vestrit, Davad Restart, Rache, Malta Haven·Mentioned: Mingsley, Kyle Haven
Chapter 4: Divvytown
Kennit arrives in the pirate haven of Divvytown and is greeted with a mixture of awe and wariness by its rough inhabitants. He meets with Sorcor to plan their next raid and hints at his grand ambition to unite the Pirate Isles under a single ruler - himself. At Bettel's bagnio he encounters Etta, a proud whore who refuses to be intimidated by him, and her defiance intrigues him. He also visits Ivro the tattoo artist, adding to the carefully crafted image he projects to the pirate community. POV: Kennit·On page: Sorcor, Etta, Bettel, Ivro, Opal
Chapter 5: Bingtown
Althea sails home to Bingtown aboard a hired vessel and hurries to her family home, where she finds her father Ephron more gravely ill than she expected. She immediately begins preparing the liveship Vivacia for sea so that her father can die aboard her, fulfilling the Trader tradition that ensures the ship's quickening. Ronica and Keffria help manage the household as the family braces for the patriarch's death, while Kyle makes his own preparations to assume command of the ship. The chapter is saturated with grief and urgency as the family races to honour tradition before Ephron dies on land. Chapter 6: The Quickening of the Vivacia
Ephron Vestrit dies on the deck of the Vivacia as his family watches, and the liveship suddenly and overwhelmingly quickens - her figurehead coming to full consciousness for the first time. Brashen witnesses the quickening and shares a moment of profound connection with the newly awakened ship before Kyle dismisses him from service, taking command of Vivacia immediately. Althea is devastated both by her father's death and by Kyle's swift seizure of the ship she has always considered hers, storming off the vessel in grief and fury. The chapter marks the end of the old order in the Vestrit family and the beginning of a bitter new struggle over the ship's future. Chapter 7: Loyalties
Wintrow participates in his grandfather Ephron's burial ceremony, still reeling from the abrupt end of his monastic life. He is assigned to serve aboard the Vivacia by Kyle and is taken to meet the newly quickened ship, who immediately reaches out to him with powerful emotional intensity. Overnight, Wintrow and Vivacia have long, searching conversations on the dark deck as the ship processes her new existence and grief for the Vestrits who died to bring her to life. The bond that forms between the unlikely pair - a reluctant priest-boy and a newly conscious ship - is immediate and deep, setting up the central relationship of Wintrow's arc. POV: Wintrow Vestrit·On page: Vivacia, Kyle Haven, Mild·Mentioned: Ephron Vestrit, Althea Vestrit
Chapter 8: Night Conversations
Keffria grieves her father's death and, in her vulnerability, seeks intimacy with Kyle, whose ambition and strength she both fears and clings to. Meanwhile Brashen escorts Althea back toward the Vestrit home after she has stormed off the ship, and the two have a frank and painful conversation about their uncertain futures. When they arrive, Kyle confronts Brashen aggressively, making clear he is dismissed and unwelcome. Brashen, left with nowhere to turn, goes to sit with the mad liveship Paragon on the beach - his only remaining company. POV: Keffria Vestrit Haven·On page: Kyle Haven, Brashen Trell, Althea Vestrit, Paragon·Mentioned: Ronica Vestrit
Chapter 9: A Change of Fortunes
Paragon reflects on his own maimed and beached existence as Brashen arrives to keep him company, the two forming an odd but genuine bond over shared rejection. In Divvytown, Kennit and Sorcor share a dinner at which Kennit outlines his evolving plan to take a liveship as the centrepiece of his bid for power over the Pirate Isles. Back on the Vivacia, Wintrow clashes with Kyle over his role aboard the ship, refusing to abandon his priestly identity, and Kyle responds by striking him unconscious in front of the crew. The chapter juxtaposes three characters defined by what has been forcibly taken from them: Paragon's eyes, Brashen's family name, and Wintrow's vocation. POV: Paragon, Kennit, Wintrow Vestrit·On page: Brashen Trell, Kennit, Sorcor, Wintrow Vestrit, Kyle Haven, Vivacia
Chapter 10: Confrontations
Althea arrives aboard the Vivacia to find Wintrow still recovering from Kyle's blow, and she confronts Kyle directly, demanding he release the ship to her. Kyle produces Ephron's will, which leaves the ship to him as long as he sails it profitably - leaving Althea with no legal standing. Ronica sides with the will, choosing family financial stability over her daughter's claim, and Althea feels utterly betrayed by both her mother and the law. She walks out of the family home, severing ties and vowing to prove herself worthy of the ship by another means. POV: Althea Vestrit·On page: Kyle Haven, Ronica Vestrit, Wintrow Vestrit, Keffria Vestrit Haven·Mentioned: Vivacia, Ephron Vestrit
Chapter 11: Consequences and Reflections
Althea seeks legal counsel from family adviser Curtil, who confirms there is nothing she can do to challenge Ephron's will. She visits the Vivacia one last time to say goodbye to the ship, a parting that is emotionally devastating for both of them. A chance encounter leads her to Amber's bead shop, where the strange woman speaks with unnerving knowledge about Althea's situation and about liveships. Althea sends a brief note to her mother and then walks down to the beach to visit Paragon, uncertain what her next step will be. POV: Althea Vestrit·On page: Curtil, Vivacia, The Fool, Paragon·Mentioned: Ronica Vestrit, Kyle Haven
Chapter 12: Of Derelicts and Slaveships
Paragon sits alone on the dark beach until Althea arrives, and then Brashen returns, and the three hold an unlikely conversation in the darkness - the mad ship serving as a strange neutral ground for two people who have lost everything. In Divvytown, Kennit and Sorcor execute their plan to take a Chalcedean slaver ship, with Kennit personally and violently leading the boarding action and killing the slaver captain. The attack is framed partly as predatory ambition and partly as a liberation of enslaved people, leaving the moral valence deliberately uncertain. Kennit's charm and ruthlessness are on full display as he begins the first concrete step toward his kingly ambitions. POV: Paragon, Kennit·On page: Althea Vestrit, Brashen Trell, Kennit, Sorcor
Chapter 13: Transitions
Brashen wakes on Paragon's beach, regretting the cold comfort he gave Althea the night before, and the blind liveship urges him to seek her out. Althea visits the shop of Amber, who gives her a carved wooden bead and encourages her to pursue her claim to Vivacia. Wintrow dines with Kyle and refuses to accept a sailor's earring, insisting he belongs to Sa's priesthood - Kyle threatens him. Ronica visits Vivacia at the dock late at night, and the ship mourns Ephron and expresses longing for Althea. Back in Bingtown, Kyle refuses Keffria time alone with Wintrow, while Malta lobbies loudly for a ballgown. Ronica discusses the household servant Rache's history with slavery and the political threat of the New Traders, then visits Vivacia at the docks alone at night. Althea secretly meets Wintrow at the dock and he agrees to vouch that Kyle swore an oath to return Vivacia to her. Ronica meets secretly in the kitchen with Rain Wild Trader Caolwn Festrew, who delivers an ultimatum: repay the family debt with sixteen measures of gold by midwinter, or pay in blood. Keffria and Kyle discuss Malta's behaviour that night. Brashen serves as second mate and quietly arranges for Reller to keep watch over Althea without her knowledge. Aboard Vivacia, Wintrow and Mild bond in the crow's nest; the Reaper reaches the Barren Islands where Althea proves her worth at skinning sea-bears, but Brashen warns her not to draw attention to herself. Around the campfire, Reller tells the crew tales of dragons. POV: Althea Vestrit·On page: Brashen Trell, Wintrow Vestrit, Reller, Mild, Captain Sichel·Mentioned: Vivacia
