Apollo and Meg arrive in Oakland with Jason Grace's coffin in a rented hearse. As they drive towards Camp Jupiter through the Caldecott Tunnel, a ghoulish undead creature lands on the roof and rips it open. Meg orders Apollo to swerve, and the hearse plunges off the highway into a canyon. The creature is one of the undead forces of Tarquin, the ancient Roman king, who has been raising an army of the dead near Camp Jupiter.
