He processes prisoners for execution and discusses finances and investigations with his assistant Tanal, deciding to investigate Bruthen himself. Rautos Hivanar, Master of the Liberty Consign, has become obsessed with pieces of an ancient construct unearthed on his estate, and sends Venitt to investigate the Factor of Drene. Bivatt and the newly appointed Overseer Brohl observe the looting of a massacred Awl camp by Bluerose Lancers, revealing that the Letherii justification for the raids is entirely fabricated. Silchas Ruin slaughters Tiste Edur warriors and Letherii soldiers to free Udinaas and Kettle from a slave cart, while Seren and Fear emerge from hiding.
