Chapter 1: Owl Post
Harry turns thirteen at midnight whilst secretly doing his homework under the covers at the Dursleys' house. He receives birthday presents by owl post from Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid - including a Pocket Sneakoscope, a Broomstick Servicing Kit, and a biting Monster Book of Monsters. A letter from Hogwarts includes a Hogsmeade permission form that Harry knows Vernon will never willingly sign.

Chapter 2: Aunt Marge's Big Mistake
Harry bargains with Vernon to behave during Aunt Marge's visit in exchange for a signed Hogsmeade form. After enduring a week of Marge's insults, Harry loses control when she speaks ill of his parents and accidentally inflates her like a balloon. Furious and reckless, he grabs his trunk and wand and storms out of Privet Drive into the night.

Chapter 3: The Knight Bus
Stranded on a dark street, Harry glimpses a large black dog before being picked up by the Knight Bus. He learns from the conductor about escaped prisoner Sirius Black, a supposed mass murderer and supporter of Voldemort. Upon arriving at the Leaky Cauldron, Harry is met by the Minister of Magic himself, who surprisingly lets him off without punishment and arranges for him to stay in Diagon Alley until term begins.

Chapter 4: The Leaky Cauldron
Harry spends a pleasant fortnight in Diagon Alley before reuniting with Ron and Hermione. At the Magical Menagerie, Hermione buys a ginger cat called Crookshanks that immediately goes after Ron's rat Scabbers. That evening, Harry overhears Mr and Mrs Weasley arguing about whether to tell him that Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban and is believed to be coming after him. Chapter 5: The Dementor
On the Hogwarts Express, Harry, Ron, and Hermione share a compartment with the sleeping Professor Lupin. Draco arrives to taunt them but retreats at the sight of a teacher. When the train stops and a dementor enters their compartment, Harry faints and hears a woman screaming. Chapter 6: Talons and Tea Leaves
Harry's first day of third-year classes begins with Divination, where Professor Trelawney sees the Grim - a death omen - in his tea leaves, alarming the class. In McGonagall's Transfiguration lesson, she dismisses Trelawney's predictions. The highlight is Hagrid's first Care of Magical Creatures lesson, where Harry successfully rides the hippogriff Buckbeak, but Draco insults the creature and is slashed by its talons. Chapter 7: The Boggart in the Wardrobe
In Potions, Draco milks his arm injury whilst Snape bullies Ron and Harry. Draco hints darkly that Harry should want revenge on Sirius Black. In their first practical Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, Professor Lupin teaches the class to fight a boggart with the Riddikulus charm. Neville faces the boggart first - which takes Snape's form - and dresses it in his grandmother's clothes. Lupin deliberately prevents Harry from facing the boggart, which puzzles him. Chapter 8: Flight of the Fat Lady
Harry is denied permission to visit Hogsmeade by McGonagall, so he spends Halloween alone in the castle. Professor Lupin invites him for tea and explains he stopped Harry facing the boggart because he feared it would take Voldemort's shape. Snape delivers a mysterious smoking potion to Lupin. After the feast, the Gryffindors discover the Fat Lady's portrait slashed to ribbons - Sirius Black has tried to break into Gryffindor Tower. Chapter 9: Grim Defeat
After Sirius Black's break-in, Dumbledore has the students sleep in the Great Hall while the castle is searched. Harry overhears Snape suggesting that Lupin helped Black enter, but Dumbledore dismisses this. When Lupin falls ill, Snape takes his Defence class and sets an essay on werewolves. Ron gets detention for defending Hermione from Snape's cruelty. Chapter 10: The Marauder's Map
Harry asks Professor Lupin to teach him anti-dementor magic, and Lupin agrees to start after Christmas. Fred and George give Harry the Marauder's Map, which shows every person in Hogwarts and secret passages to Hogsmeade. Harry sneaks to Hogsmeade and reunites with Ron and Hermione in Honeydukes. In the Three Broomsticks, they overhear McGonagall, Hagrid, and Fudge reveal that Sirius Black was Harry's parents' best friend, their Secret-Keeper, and his godfather - and that he betrayed them to Voldemort and murdered Pettigrew along with twelve Muggles.

Chapter 11: The Firebolt
Devastated by the revelation that Sirius Black betrayed his parents, Harry visits Hagrid, who is distraught over Buckbeak's upcoming hearing before the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. Ron and Hermione help research Buckbeak's defence. On Christmas morning, Harry receives an anonymous Firebolt broomstick with no note. Hermione reports it to McGonagall, who confiscates it to check for jinxes, suspecting Black sent it. Ron and Harry are furious with Hermione. Dumbledore and Snape appear at Christmas dinner.

Chapter 12: The Patronus

That same evening, Ron discovers blood on his sheets and Scabbers gone, with ginger cat hairs nearby - he is convinced Hermione's cat Crookshanks has eaten his rat. Chapter 13: Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw
Ron and Hermione's friendship fractures over the apparent death of Scabbers. Harry flies the Firebolt magnificently in practice. During the Quidditch match against Ravenclaw, three figures in dementor cloaks appear on the pitch, but Harry casts his Patronus at them and catches the Snitch to win. The disguised dementors turn out to be Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, and Flint. McGonagall docks fifty points from Slytherin. That night, Sirius Black breaks into Gryffindor Tower again, standing over Ron's bed with a knife; Ron wakes and screams, and Black flees. Fred, George, and Ginny are present in the common room scenes.

Chapter 14: Snape's Grudge
After Sirius Black's second break-in, security is tightened and Neville is banned from Hogsmeade visits for losing the passwords. Hagrid invites Harry and Ron for tea and tells them about Buckbeak's case. Harry sneaks to Hogsmeade again using the Marauder's Map, but Draco spots his disembodied head and alerts Snape. Snape confiscates the map and summons Lupin, who covers for Harry but privately warns him that the map's creators would have wanted to lure him out of school. Hermione is present in various scenes.

Chapter 16: Professor Trelawney's Prediction
As exams approach, Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn that Buckbeak's execution date has been set. During Harry's Divination exam, Professor Trelawney falls into a genuine trance and predicts that the servant of Voldemort will set out to rejoin his master that night. The trio visit Hagrid under the Invisibility Cloak to comfort him before the execution, and discover Scabbers alive in Hagrid's milk jug. As they leave, they hear the thud of an axe from Hagrid's garden. Draco has been gloating about the execution.

Chapter 17: Cat, Rat and Dog
Scabbers escapes from Ron's grip and bolts across the grounds, pursued by Crookshanks. As Ron catches his rat near the Whomping Willow, an enormous black dog leaps out, seizes Ron by the arm, and drags him beneath the tree into a hidden tunnel. Harry and Hermione follow, battered by the Willow's branches, and find themselves in the Shrieking Shack. There, Ron sits with his broken leg, and the dog transforms into the emaciated figure of Sirius Black, who disarms Harry and announces he intends to commit murder.

Professor Lupin arrives in the Shrieking Shack and, to Harry's horror, embraces Sirius Black. Lupin explains that Scabbers is actually Pettigrew - an unregistered Animagus. He reveals that he, Sirius, Pettigrew, and Harry's father were the creators of the Marauder's Map: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. His friends became Animagi to keep him company during his monthly werewolf transformations. Lupin confesses he is a werewolf, confirming what Snape had long suspected. Ron and Hermione listen with growing astonishment.

Chapter 19: The Servant of Lord Voldemort
Snape bursts into the Shrieking Shack, having followed Lupin on the Marauder's Map, and binds Lupin with cords. He refuses to listen to any explanation and threatens to hand both Lupin and Sirius to the dementors. Harry, Ron, and Hermione simultaneously disarm Snape, knocking him unconscious. Lupin and Sirius then force Scabbers to transform, revealing the cowering form of Pettigrew. He confesses that he was the Potters' true Secret-Keeper and betrayed them to Voldemort, framing Sirius. Harry stops Sirius and Lupin from killing Pettigrew, insisting they take him to the castle as proof of Sirius's innocence.

Chapter 20: The Dementor's Kiss
As the group heads back to the castle, Sirius offers Harry a home as his godfather. But the full moon rises and Lupin transforms into a werewolf, having missed his Wolfsbane Potion. Sirius shifts into his dog form to fight the werewolf, and in the chaos, Pettigrew transforms back into a rat and escapes. Harry finds Sirius by the lake, collapsing under the assault of hundreds of dementors. As the dementors close in to perform the Kiss on Sirius, Harry sees a brilliant Patronus drive them away from across the lake before losing consciousness. Ron is stunned and Hermione is with Harry. Snape is floating unconscious throughout.
