Min arrives at the White Tower in disguise, bearing a message from Moiraine for the Amyrlin Seat, and is shaken by visions of death and strife swirling around every Aes Sedai she passes. Siuan Sanche presses Min into staying as bait for the Black Ajah, while elsewhere Elaida begins plotting against the Amyrlin, Dain Bornhald leads Whitecloaks into the Two Rivers hunting Perrin, and the Seanchan High Lady Suroth quietly prepares the Return from her island stronghold.
A bubble of evil erupts through the Stone of Tear, turning the world strange and deadly around all three ta'veren at once. Perrin's axe leaps from its place to attack him, the figures on Mat's playing cards swell to murderous life, and Rand's own reflections step from the mirrors in his chamber wielding swords of fire, nearly killing him before he can absorb them back into himself.
Perrin goes to confront Rand about the bubble of evil and finds him sitting bloodied among shattered mirrors with Callandor across his knees. Moiraine arrives to Heal him, explaining that the Dark One's touch on the world is growing stronger, and Rand sends everyone away while the Maidens insist on tending him.
Thom Merrilin finishes forging a letter designed to set two scheming High Lords against each other, part of his quiet campaign to keep Rand safe through the Game of Houses. Mat arrives wanting to flee Tear immediately, but Thom persuades him to stay at least until morning, and they settle into a game of stones.
Egwene and Nynaeve question their two Black Ajah captives in the Stone, hearing conflicting stories about whether the true danger to Rand lies in Tanchico or in a plot to free the false Dragon Mazrim Taim. Aviendha sits with them, watchful and armed, while the women weigh which trail of the Black Ajah to follow.
Moiraine storms into the questioning furious with Rand's stubbornness, and the women debate whether he should march against Sammael in Illian or wait. Elayne and Egwene settle the question of Rand between them - Egwene admits she loves him only as a brother and gives Elayne her blessing. Moiraine speaks of the twisted redstone doorway ter'angreal in the Great Holding and warns the girls to focus on Tanchico.
Egwene and Elayne visit Rand to help him understand channelling, and the three discover the fundamental differences between saidin and saidar - that women must surrender to the Source while men must seize it by force. Egwene tells Rand plainly that her feelings for him have changed, and he admits the same, though neither is entirely sure the other means it.
Elayne stays behind with Rand after Egwene leaves, and after an awkward courtship of silk flowers and honest words, they share their first kiss. Rand then faces the High Lords, using intelligence gathered by Thom and advice from Elayne to force through lower grain taxes and new trade treaties, while Egwene unwisely tells Mat about the twisted doorway ter'angreal.
Days of stifling heat settle over Tear as everyone waits for Rand to act. Mat gambles restlessly in the city but keeps finding himself drawn back to the Stone, Perrin searches for something to lure Faile away to safety, and Elayne spends every spare moment with Rand. Lanfear appears in Rand's chambers in her true form for the first time, tempting him with promises of power, and a Gray Man nearly kills them both before Rand opens his door onto a scene of chaos.
Trollocs and Myrddraal pour into the Stone of Tear on grain barges, and Rand leads the Defenders in a desperate running battle through the corridors. He takes up Callandor and unleashes a devastating weave of lightning that destroys every Shadowspawn in the fortress, then breaks down in grief when he cannot use the Power to bring a dead child back to life.
Egwene enters Tel'aran'rhiod without the ring ter'angreal, searching the Panarch's Palace in Tanchico for clues about the Black Ajah, and finds a broken ter'angreal among ancient relics. She is pulled twice into the Aiel Waste against her will, where a formidable Wise One named Amys confronts her and demands she come to Cold Rocks Hold to learn the ways of Dreamwalking.
Egwene tells the others of Amys and decides she must go to the Waste to learn Dreamwalking, while Elayne and Nynaeve will pursue the Black Ajah to Tanchico. Moiraine arrives bearing grim news - Joiya and Amico have been murdered in their cells during the Trolloc attack - and produces a letter from the Wise Ones summoning Aviendha to Rhuidean, which the young Maiden furiously resists.
Mat hears in a tavern that Whitecloaks have invaded the Two Rivers hunting a man with golden eyes and the false Dragon, and rushes to tell Perrin, only to find him already packing. The pull of ta'veren keeps Mat bound to Rand despite his desire to go home, so he makes Perrin promise to look after his family, and a brief encounter with Berelain leaves him bewildered.
Perrin tries to drive Faile away by praising Berelain, hoping she will abandon him rather than follow him into the danger of the Two Rivers. Faile sees through none of his deception and storms out heartbroken, while Berelain's unexpected interest in Perrin sets off a confrontation between the two women that Rhuarc must physically break apart.
Mat ventures into the Great Holding and steps through the twisted redstone doorway into the realm of the snake-like Aelfinn, who answer his three questions with cryptic pronouncements - that he must go to Rhuidean, that he will marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons, and that he will die and live again. Rand and Moiraine also emerge from the ter'angreal, and Moiraine is furious to learn both men used it.
Perrin prepares to leave for the Two Rivers with Loial as his guide through the Ways, but Faile has tricked Loial into swearing to take her first, forcing Perrin to travel on her terms. Gaul volunteers to accompany Perrin, and Bain and Chiad join Faile, while in another part of the Stone Elayne rages over the letter she wrote Rand and Lan confronts Nynaeve about her journey to Tanchico, kissing her fiercely and vowing he will not survive her long.
Moiraine manipulates Thom into accompanying Elayne and Nynaeve to Tanchico by offering the names of the Red sisters who gentled his nephew Owyn. In the White Tower, Min watches the political currents while disguised as the flirtatious Elmindreda, and Siuan receives word that Mazrim Taim has escaped and that Rand has taken Callandor, prompting her to summon the Hall.
Perrin's company rides out of Tear and enters the Ways, the ancient paths between Waygates now dark and crumbling. Faile refuses to relent in their stubborn contest of wills, and Perrin follows behind her and Loial through the lightless bridges and islands, listening always for the distant wail of Machin Shin.
Elayne and Nynaeve board the Sea Folk raker Wavedancer, where the Sailmistress Coine agrees to carry them to Tanchico after learning of the Coramoor and the threat of the Black Ajah. The Sea Folk speak of the Jendai Prophecy with reverence, and Coine refuses payment, offering the gift of passage from her own purse despite the anger of her Cargomaster husband.
Thom and Juilin arrive at the docks to join the voyage to Tanchico, sent by Moiraine and Lan respectively. Elayne discovers that the Windfinder Jorin can channel - weaving complex flows of Air and Water to speed the ship - and learns the Sea Folk have kept this secret from the White Tower for generations, sending a few channellers to Tar Valon as cover.
