Chapter 1: My Rescue Operation Goes Very Wrong
Percy, Annabeth, and Thalia travel to Westover Hall military school in Maine to retrieve two half-blood siblings that Grover has found. They meet Nico and Bianca di Angelo, but the vice principal Dr. Thorn reveals himself as a manticore and attacks.
Chapter 2: The Vice Principal Gets a Missile Launcher
Dr. Thorn captures Annabeth and drags her toward a cliff. The goddess Artemis and her Hunters arrive to fight the manticore. In the chaos, Annabeth falls off the cliff with the monster and vanishes. The Hunters agree to escort the group to Camp Half-Blood.
Bianca di Angelo shocks everyone by choosing to join Artemis's Hunters, abandoning her brother Nico. Artemis departs alone to hunt a powerful monster, leaving her lieutenant Zoe Nightshade in charge. At camp, the Oracle issues a prophecy for a quest to rescue Artemis.
Thalia leads the quest with Zoe Nightshade, Bianca di Angelo, and Grover. Percy is excluded but follows secretly. They drive west through New England, battling monsters at every turn.
Percy arrives at a wintry Camp Half-Blood with Thalia, Nico and the Hunters, and reports the loss of Annabeth to Chiron and Dionysus. After a tense argument with Mr D, he discovers a new saltwater fountain in his cabin from his father and sends an Iris-message to Tyson, who is forging weapons for the merfolk. That night Percy dreams of Annabeth trapped under a crushing weight of darkness with Luke walking away.
Grover tells Percy that Zoë had a matching nightmare and that Artemis appears to have been captured, and shares his suspicion that Annabeth had been thinking about joining the Hunters. Percy visits the silent Oracle in the attic, then plays a chaotic capture the flag against the Hunters that ends in a fight with Thalia. The mummified Oracle walks down to the creek and delivers a prophecy to Zoë about five going west to free a goddess in chains.
After hauling the Oracle back to the attic, Percy joins a council of cabin leaders where the quest party is chosen. Zoë refuses to take a boy, so Thalia, Grover, Bianca and Phoebe are picked alongside Zoë, leaving Percy behind. Chiron gently sends him home, his mum tells him to follow his heart, and a black pegasus called Blackjack arrives before dawn asking for help with a creature trapped in the sea.
Blackjack flies Percy out to sea, where he frees a frightened cow-serpent calf tangled in a fishing net and names her Bessie. Returning to camp, he spots Nico eavesdropping on Zoë and Bianca, and learns Phoebe has been poisoned by a prank from the Stoll brothers. Nico begs Percy to follow the quest invisibly and keep his sister safe, and Percy promises to do his best before flying off after the camp van.
Percy shadows the quest on Blackjack to Washington DC, where Dionysus briefly catches him at the Chrysler Building but lets him go after a strange story about Ariadne. At the Museum of Natural History he overhears the General and Luke with Dr Thorn, and watches the General plant dragon's teeth that grow into twelve skeleton warriors. Percy snatches the silver Hunter scarf meant to set them on the trail, but a skeleton tears a scrap from his sleeve and takes his scent instead.
Percy bursts into the Air and Space Museum to warn Thalia, Grover, Zoë and Bianca, just as the Nemean Lion attacks among the rockets. He defeats the lion by pelting freeze-dried space food into its mouth so the Hunters can shoot it down, and claims its pelt as a magical golden coat. With skeleton warriors closing in across the lawn, Zoë grudgingly accepts him as the fifth member of the quest.
Chased by a military helicopter, the quest abandons the camp van and Bianca leads them onto the DC Metro, hinting she and Nico once lived there before the subway existed. A homeless man in the railway yard, secretly Apollo, conjures a westbound auto-train carrying luxury cars. On board, Thalia reveals Zoë once tried to recruit her, and Percy dreams he is Hercules receiving the sword Anaklusmos from a young Zoë in the garden of the Hesperides.
The party climbs off the train in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, where Grover senses the presence of the lost god Pan on a warm wind. Skeleton warriors in police uniforms ambush them, and Bianca discovers her hunting knife can destroy one with a single stab. A giant Erymanthian Boar then crashes through the trees, scattering the skeletons, and the quest rides it across the desert to Gila Claw, Arizona.
Camped at a ghost town beside the gods' junkyard, the team realises Bianca and Nico were trapped in the Lotus Casino for decades. Ares arrives with Aphrodite, who tells Percy she set the whole quest in motion as a tragic love story about Annabeth. Crossing Hephaestus's junkyard, Bianca quietly pockets a small god figurine for Nico, waking the giant bronze automaton Talos. To stop it she climbs inside its maintenance hatch and is killed when the machine collapses, fulfilling the prophecy line about being lost in the land without rain.
Grieving Bianca, the team drives a junkyard tow truck to a river canyon and paddles upstream with the help of friendly naiads. Zoë tells Percy she was once a Hesperid who helped Hercules and was exiled for it, and that she forged Riptide for him. At Hoover Dam Percy finds Bessie the Ophiotaurus mysteriously waiting in the lake, is helped by a grey-eyed park ranger who appears to be Athena in disguise, and meets a mortal girl named Rachel Elizabeth Dare who can see through the Mist. Cornered by skeletons on the dam, Thalia prays to her father and the two bronze guardian statues come alive to fly the team to safety.
The bronze angels carry the quest to San Francisco, where Zoë sends Percy disguised as a vagrant to wrestle Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea. Nereus reveals the doomsday monster is Bessie, the Ophiotaurus, whose entrails can grant the power to overthrow the gods. Dr Thorn ambushes them and tries to tempt Thalia into sacrificing Bessie on her sixteenth birthday, until Dionysus appears through an Iris-message and engulfs the manticore in grape vines. Zoë points across the bay to Mount Tamalpais, the garden of her sisters and the prison of Artemis.
Chapter 16: We Meet the Dragon of Eternal Bad Breath
Grover volunteers to escort Bessie back to Long Island through the sea, and Percy sacrifices his Nemean lion coat to ask his father for safe passage. The trio visit Annabeth's father in San Francisco, borrow his yellow convertible, and drive towards Mount Tamalpais, narrowly escaping a lightning blast that destroys the car. They sneak past Ladon, the hundred-headed dragon guarding the golden apples, and reach the summit to find Artemis chained beneath the weight of the sky, while Atlas, Luke and a captive Annabeth confront them, revealing that Atlas is Zoë's father.
Percy, Thalia, and Annabeth return to Olympus. The gods debate whether to destroy Percy as a precaution against the Great Prophecy. Thalia solves the prophecy problem by joining the Hunters of Artemis, freezing her age before sixteen.
Annabeth says goodbye and goes home to San Francisco. Grover is granted his searcher's licence to find Pan. Percy bears the weight of knowing the prophecy now rests on him alone.
At the winter solstice council, the gods vote narrowly not to destroy Percy or Thalia. Artemis is honoured for her bravery. Percy senses that war with the Titans is coming.
Back at camp, Percy must tell Nico di Angelo that his sister Bianca is dead. Nico is devastated and enraged. He accidentally summons skeletal warriors from the earth, revealing he is a son of Hades. He flees camp alone, blaming Percy for breaking his promise.
