The Ankh-Morpork City Watch is the police force of the city of Ankh-Morpork, and one of the great institutions of the Discworld. It began as a near-useless Night Watch — three men and a six-foot dwarf — before Commander Vimes transformed it into a genuinely effective force. The Watch now includes trolls, dwarfs, a werewolf, a vampire, a zombie, and humans, reflecting the city's own diversity and moral complexity. Under Vimes, the Watch operates on the principle that the law applies to everyone — a radical idea in a city run by thieves, assassins, and aristocrats.
