Adding Appearances
Track where characters show up in each book.
What are appearances?
An appearance records that a character shows up in a specific chapter. Each appearance has a type that describes how the character features:
- Point of view - The chapter is told from this character's perspective. You see events through their eyes.
- On page - The character physically appears in the scene.
- Mentioned - The character is referenced but doesn't appear in person.
How to add an appearance
- Navigate to a character page and find the story arc section.
- Find the book where the character appears. You'll see small edit icons next to existing entries.
- Click the + button at book level to add a new appearance.
- Select the chapter where the character appears.
- Choose how the character appears (point of view, on page, or mentioned).
- Add notes (optional but helpful) describing what happens.
- Submit for curator review.
You'll need to sign in first. The edit icons only appear when you're logged in.
Tips
Be specific with notes
"Fights Szeth on the tower" is more helpful than "major battle scene". Notes should give enough context for someone who hasn't read the book recently.
Choose the right type
If a chapter switches between perspective characters, mark the main one as "point of view" and others as "on page". If a character is only discussed in conversation, use "mentioned".
Don't worry about completeness
You don't need to add every appearance for every character. Adding a few high-quality entries is better than rushing through. Others can fill in the gaps later.
Review process
A curator will review your appearance submission. They'll check the chapter is correct, the type makes sense, and the notes are accurate. Reviews usually happen within a few days. You'll be notified when it's approved.
