The Holy Ones, the angelic spirits created by Iluvatar before the beginning of the world. At his bidding, the Ainur sang the Great Music (Ainulindale) that brought the world into existence. Those Ainur who entered the world to shape and guide it are known as the Valar and Maiar. Their nature is spiritual, though they can take physical form when they choose.
