The greatest kingdom of Men in the west of Middle-earth, the South-kingdom of the Dunedain, founded by Isildur and Anarion at the end of the Second Age. Its capital moves from Osgiliath to Minas Tirith (originally Minas Anor) as the kingdom contracts under pressure from Mordor and other enemies. By the time of the War of the Ring, Gondor is ruled by Stewards in the absence of a king, its population diminished and its borders shrunk. The return of Aragorn as King Elessar restores the kingdom to glory.
