Huge, brutish creatures bred by Morgoth in the First Age, perhaps in mockery of the Ents. Strong but dim-witted, most Trolls turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. They come in several varieties, including cave-trolls, hill-trolls, and the fearsome Olog-hai bred by Sauron, who can endure daylight. Bilbo encounters three Trolls early in The Hobbit, and Trolls appear throughout the War of the Ring as shock troops of the Enemy.
