The Seeing Stones, seven indestructible crystal spheres made by the Noldor in the Blessed Realm and brought to Middle-earth by the Numenoreans. Each palantir allows its user to see across vast distances and communicate with the users of other Stones. By the end of the Third Age, only three are known to remain in use: the Stone of Orthanc (seized by Saruman), the Stone of Minas Tirith (used by Denethor), and the Stone of Barad-dur (held by Sauron). Sauron's control of one Stone allows him to manipulate both Saruman and Denethor through their use of theirs.
