The final battle of the First Age, in which the Valar at last intervened directly against Morgoth. The Host of Valinor, aided by the Vanyar Elves and the Eagles, assaulted Morgoth's fortress of Angband. The conflict was so cataclysmic that the entire region of Beleriand was broken and sank beneath the sea. Morgoth was captured, his iron crown beaten into a collar, and he was cast through the Door of Night into the Void beyond the world. His servant Sauron, however, escaped.
