The horse-lords of Rohan, supreme cavalry of Middle-earth, descended from the Northmen of Rhovanion. Granted the land of Calenardhon by Gondor in return for a permanent military alliance, the Rohirrim are tall, fair-haired, and deeply bonded to their horses. Their culture draws on Anglo-Saxon and steppe-nomad traditions. The charge of the Rohirrim at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields is one of the defining moments of the War of the Ring.
