A precious silver metal found only in the mines of Khazad-dum (Moria), prized above gold for its beauty, lightness, and strength. Also called true-silver or Moria-silver, it could be beaten and polished like copper but was as hard as tempered steel. The Dwarves' desire for mithril drove them ever deeper into the mountains, ultimately awakening the Balrog. Bilbo's mithril coat, a gift from Thorin, saves Frodo's life in Moria.
