The ancient capital of Gondor, built on both banks of the river Anduin between Minas Anor and Minas Ithil. Once a great city with a famous dome housing one of the palantiri, Osgiliath was gradually ruined by plague, civil war, and attacks from Mordor. By the time of the War of the Ring, it is a desolate ruin fought over by the forces of Gondor and Sauron as a crossing-point of the Anduin.
