A psychotic monorail train created by North Central Positronics, and a distant cousin of the cyborg Guardians of the Beam. Blaine was far more than a train - he was the Ghost in the Machines, the city-wide computer intelligence of Lud. Suffering from a computerised split personality disorder (composed of the malevolent Big Blaine and the terrified Little Blaine), he gassed the residents of Lud and destroyed his companion mono Patricia. He agreed to carry Roland's ka-tet along the Path of the Beam to Topeka in exchange for a riddling contest, but was ultimately defeated by Eddie Dean's specialty: bad jokes.
