A grey, joyless underworld where the ghosts of all who die are confined by harpies who torment them with their worst memories. Lyra and Will journey there to find the ghost of Lyra's friend Roger, and ultimately open a way for the dead to dissolve back into the atoms of the living world - a mercy that transforms death from imprisonment into reunion with the universe. This act is one of the most radical elements of the series.
