A waterborne people in Lyra's world who travel the rivers and canals of England in their narrowboats, similar to the Romani or Traveller communities. The Gyptians are a proud, independent people with their own laws, customs, and governance under their king, John Faa, and his councillors. When the Gobblers begin kidnapping children - including many Gyptian children - the Gyptians mount an expedition to the far north to rescue them, taking Lyra with them.
