A magical detection charm placed upon all underage witches and wizards in Britain. It alerts the Ministry of Magic whenever magic is performed in the vicinity of a person under seventeen. The Trace breaks automatically when a young witch or wizard comes of age, and it cannot distinguish who actually performed the magic.
