Neither purely biological nor mechanical - it repurposes any organic matter it contacts, hijacking cellular machinery to build structures its creators designed. First discovered on Phoebe, then deployed on Eros, it eventually constructs the ring gate network. Its builders (the "Romans") were themselves destroyed by an unknown force that inhabits the spaces between the gates.
