The language spoken during the Age of Legends. After the Breaking of the World, a simpler common tongue gradually replaced it among ordinary people, though nobles and the educated continued to speak it for centuries. By the Third Age it survives mainly among the Ogier, in scholarly texts, and in the old blood of certain peoples such as those of the Two Rivers, who sometimes speak it under stress.
