The innate Investiture that every person on Nalthis is born with. A single Breath is barely noticeable, but accumulated Breaths grant increasingly powerful abilities called Heightenings: enhanced colour perception, perfect pitch, the ability to sense other Breaths, agelessness, and more. Breath can be freely given to another person and is the fuel for Awakening (animating objects with commands). A person who gives away their Breath becomes a Drab - they lose their colour sense, get sick more easily, and feel a subtle wrongness.
