The novel expands the role of the Rain Wilds and begins to connect the liveship mythology more explicitly to the Elderling civilisation that underlies the universe. Malta Vestrit's arc is among the most carefully observed coming-of-age narratives in the sequence, and Kennit's characterisation becomes considerably more complex.
