Long, thin shafts of spiceplastic used by the Fremen for capturing, mounting, and steering sandworms. Ranging from 1.35 to 2.1 metres in length, each hook had a barbed plasteel tip at one end and a moulded grip at the other. The hookman inserted hooks beneath the leading edges of a sandworm's ring segments, then braced back to open a gap. The worm would roll away from the exposed area to prevent sand from entering, allowing the rider to steer. Earning one's own maker hooks by being first to mount a worm was an important badge of Fremen adulthood.
