A device used to communicate over distances by modulating the nerve impulses of a trained bat or bird, allowing it to carry a message and reproduce it in the voice of the sender. The distrans represented one of the ingenious non-computer communication technologies developed after the Butlerian Jihad. It was used by the Fremen and others who needed to send messages across the desert without electronic devices that might be detected.
