An order of scholars, healers, and learned men trained at the Citadel in Oldtown. Maesters serve as advisors, physicians, and ravenkeepers to the lords of Westeros, forswearing family and allegiance to serve the castle rather than the lord. Each link in a maester's chain represents mastery of a different field of study.
