The oldest and arguably the most powerful of the Free Cities, situated at the mouth of the Rhoyne in southern Essos. Founded as the first colony of Valyria, Volantis considers itself the heir to the Freehold and has attempted to conquer the other Free Cities on several occasions. The city relies heavily on slave labour and is divided between the Old Blood nobility and the newer merchant classes.
