A chain of many metals worn around the neck by maesters of the Citadel, with each link forged from a different metal to represent mastery of a particular field of study. A link of black iron signifies ravencraft, gold represents economics, and silver denotes healing, among many others. The chain is both a symbol of knowledge and a reminder that the maester is bound in service.
