A vast military empire that has conquered much of the known world through a combination of military might, pragmatic governance, and powerful mages (cadre mages attached to military units). Founded by the Emperor Kellanved and his companion Dancer, the Empire is run by a complex bureaucracy and a professional military. The Empress Laseen's seizure of power from Kellanved drives much of the political tension in the early books.
