Salander lies in a hospital bed recovering from a gunshot wound as Blomkvist races to expose a secret faction within the Swedish Security Service that has protected Zalachenko for decades and is now trying to have Salander declared legally incompetent and institutionalised. The novel culminates in her trial and the public exposure of the conspiracy against her.
