A year after the events of Lyra's Oxford, Lyra travels to the northern town of Trollesund with an archaeological expedition from Jordan College, still troubled by the unspoken distance between herself and Pantalaimon since their separation in the world of the dead. She visits the witch consul Dr Lanselius to ask how witches cope after the painful rite of separating from their daemons, learning that even Serafina Pekkala and her daemon Kaisa endured similar coldness afterwards. On the tractor ride back to camp, Lyra and Pan begin to open up to each other at last, sharing observations, challenging each other, and tentatively bridging the gulf that has lain between them since their ordeal.
