Story: Demon in the Wood
The young shadow summoner who will become the Darkling arrives at a northern Grisha camp for the winter under the name Eryk, travelling with his mother Baghra. He befriends Annika and her sister Sylvi and is drawn to Annika - until she learns he is an amplifier, a Grisha whose bones could be harvested to strengthen another. The Ulle's son Lev discovers the secret too and confronts him at a frozen pond. Forced to defend himself, Eryk uses the Cut and kills both Annika and Lev, then wounds himself to cast the blame on the otkazat'sya villagers. The Ulle's people burn the village in reprisal. Baghra declares there is nowhere safe for their kind; alone in the dark, Eryk vows that one day he will make such a place.
