The story's particular achievement is rendering the Darkling sympathetic without excusing what he becomes - the violence and isolation of his early life are presented as formative without being offered as justification. Bardugo uses the compressed format effectively, establishing the emotional logic of his worldview in a way the novels gesture toward but never fully dramatise.
