The witches of Lancre are an informal coven of three, though they don't have leaders and don't call themselves a coven. Granny Weatherwax is the most highly regarded of the leaders they don't have. Nanny Ogg provides warmth, gossip, and catastrophically strong cider. The third position has been occupied variously by Magrat Garlick (now Queen of Lancre), Agnes Nitt, and Tiffany Aching. The witches deal with real problems: delivering babies, easing deaths, settling disputes, and occasionally stopping elves or demons from destroying the kingdom. Their power rests less on spells than on knowing things and making people think they might do something terrible.
