Daughter of the Elven-king Thingol and the Maia Melian, the most beautiful being ever to walk Middle-earth. Lúthien falls in love with the mortal man Beren and joins him on an impossible quest to steal a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown. Her power, courage, and choice to share in Beren's mortality define the greatest love story in Tolkien's legendarium.

Called Cúthalion, the Strongbow. Chief of the march-wardens of Doriath and Túrin's dearest friend. He searched tirelessly for Túrin after his flight and rescued him from the Orcs, but was tragically slain by Túrin himself in the darkness.

The great minstrel of Doriath, brother or close companion of Lúthien. His particular love for her, and his particular helplessness in the face of the road she chooses, is one of the small private griefs the Beren and Lúthien narrative gives careful, unhurried space.

An Elf-maiden of the woods of Doriath who at Melian's bidding watches over the young Túrin and teaches him woodland lore and the Sindarin tongue. She witnesses Saeros's ambush of Túrin and her testimony before Thingol clears him of wrongdoing.

An Elf of Doriath, one of Thingol's counsellors. He taunted Túrin about the wildness of the women of Hithlum, provoking a violent response. Fleeing naked from Túrin through the forest, he fell to his death in a ravine.

Son of Beren and Lúthien, called Thingol's Heir. He inherits the Silmaril and rules Doriath after Thingol's death, but is slain by the sons of Fëanor.

Twin sons of Dior and Nimloth of Doriath. Left to die in the winter woods by Celegorm's servants after the Second Kinslaying.

Chief captain of King Thingol of Doriath, called Mablung of the Heavy Hand - a renowned hunter and one of the great warriors of the hidden kingdom. Distinct from Mablung the Ranger of Ithilien of the later age.
