A people of the waterways of Lyra's England, living on narrowboats and maintaining a distinct culture and governance structure largely outside the Magisterium's reach. Led by Lord Faa as king and guided by the wisdom of elders including Farder Coram, the Gyptians mount the expedition to Bolvangar to rescue the children taken by the Gobblers, many of whom are their own. Resilient, self-sufficient, and fiercely loyal to their own, they are among the few organised groups in Lyra's world with both the will and the means to resist the Magisterium directly.
